Hemi Engine

If you are wondering what a Hemi engine is and what it offers you, as the driver, start with the name itself.  The Hemi engine is named after the hemispherical shape of the combustion chamber.

The Hemi engine offers the driver power and efficiency.  For years the Hemi is famed for its raw power output.  The design of the combustion chamber is curved at the top.  This design eliminates thermal inefficiencies that other engines are subject to.  For some drivers, the Hemi engine offers ideal performance.  Others may find that it goes beyond their basic needs and will not find it necessary to meet their needs.

Advantages

The Hemi engine has less surface area in the combustion chamber.  This allows the fuel in the chamber to burn more efficiently.  Less heat is lost due to the limited surface area.  Hotter fuel burns more efficiently.  Thus, the Hemi engine's design is thermally efficient.

Another advantage to Hemi engines is the valve size.  Due to the curved, or spherical design, the valves can be made larger.  This results in more airflow to the engine.  Efficient airflow results in better combustion.

By creating more power from the combustion process the Hemi engine is out-puting optimal power.

Drawbacks

While the curved chamber design offers advantages it also limits the Hemi engine in certain ways.  The chamber can only support two valves due to its design.  Many vehicles offer 4-valve cylinders and are finding they offer great performance. While the larger valves, like the 5.7 of the Hemi engine allow for more airflow, the 4-valve cylinder design also accomplishes increased airflow.
